This is my first time posting anything anywhere. But, the subject matter has definitely hit home. For as long as I've known about ADD, I was pretty sure I was candidate. I just never got around to doing anything about it (big surprise). I have recently been clinically diagnosed with ADD. I'm struggling with the idea of taking meds everyday. I really don't want to have that "drugged" feeling all day. I have a lot of personality traits that I really enjoy about myself. I'm a part time actor and musician (just hobbies but I enjoy them). I also kind of think of myself of being a pretty witty guy and I would hate to lose those traits. What I can't stand about myself is the constant forgetfulness procrastination. Which is why I want to try medication. I'm just wondering if anyone has noticed any negative changes in their personalities since going on medication.

Roland,
I saw your post and had to interject my opinion and experience with the medication I was taking. Was taking...is the only temporary, so don't let me scare you. I was recently diagnoised ADD (I am 43). Concerta was prescribed 27mg. and then increased to 35 mg. My only complaint about the medication is that I experienced extreme anxiety LATER in the day after the Concerta wore off. So much to a point I was having anxiety attacks. However my personality taking it if anything became more outgoing then I normally am and just as personable and witty as I have always been. The medication affects everyone differently, but a try with any ADD medication is worth it in my opinion for the benefits I felt while taking it. For me, I am currently off Concerta and on Lexapro to help with the anxiety(which I experienced anyway but increased with the Concerta) and then plan on going back on Concerta or another ADD medication as directed by my doctor here shortly. Hope this helps! Good luck! Lori

Hi Roland, I'm not actually diagnosed myself so i don't know all that much about meds and ADD, but if you've only been recently diagnosed and are worried about meds trying other approaches first might be an easier place to start? On the other hand, a lot of people say meds really help them and you always have the choice to change your mind. Just my opinion if it counts for anything, but any meds that take away your personality or artistic talent have got to be seriously worrying! I have been on other meds before though (because I was misdiagnosed they didn't help) but some of them were ok,(very few side effects) and some did give that drugged feeling... meds seem to be different for different people so i guess its a matter of trying.
Personally I wouldn't take them, but what works best for one person doesn't apply for everyone.
You might find they don't affect your personality in an adverse way. Just don't hesitate to talk to your doctor about any concerns, and if it isn't working out feel free to change your mind!

OK, I know this reply is really belated, but the subject matter hit home.
I was diagnosed about a year ago and went through just about every drug on the market trying to find a good one. When I found the one that worked best (Not to say good, just best.) I stuck with it for a while.
I am an actor and was in an extremely energetic comedy at the time, and I found that not only was I a more boring, dulled down person on the meds, but I didn't have as quick a reaction time, and I wasn't nearly as good at coming up with funny reactions.
I decided that I would try not taking the meds on days I had rehearsals or performances, and that helped, but I still missed that quirky, energetic side of myself that the drugs seemed to suppress.
So now I've been off of meds for a full year, and suffering appropriately.
That is all.
