In learning disorders that is. Especially my boyfriend (or at least he's the nay-sayer who's opinion matters the most)
My very close friends have seen me struggle with my school work and have seen how frustrated I get, as well as my family. My parents have talked to the psychologist at the college they work at, and the many many many school psychologists who have wanted to test (and medicate) me up through grade school. (I just finished my 2nd year of university btw)
So my problem. Basically they think (mostly based on the experience with another friend) that the help LD kids ask for is due to lazyness. My boyfriend even went so far as to say it's cheating. I don't want to argue about it because I don't think I should have to. My boyfriend is the most well adjusted guy (or gal) I know and rarely even gets stress out. He was also never bullied. I have just started to heal some of the scars I suffered up through grade and high school. I know they just don't understand but I don't know what to do. I'm not planning on going on medication because I cope with everyday quite well. I'm not officially diagnosed yet but it is a matter of paperwork really.
What should I do? At the moment it is just something that comes up occationally and I put it to rest since I can't figure out how to deal with it, but once the diagnosis comes in I see a fight with my boyfriend.

Ditch the guy. Find someone who is more understanding. I just found out I have ADD at 40 - and I know all the pain and suffering I went through...could have been lessened at least, had I had some help when I was a kid. Going through a divorce to someone who is a Special Ed Teacher of all people, who didn't make the connection between all the ADD kids he taught and ME...and he had NO patience for my difficulties. Best thing all around for me was divorcing him. I now have a boyfriend who also has AD/HD and we get along fantastically, we understand each other and support each other, what a difference - I mean, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! You don't say how old you are, I'm guessing late teens? Be careful, once you move out of your parents house you may want to try medication, cause right now your parents are organizing you; once you're on your own it could all fall apart. School is very scheduled and so can be at home, but once you have a job and you're on your own, you don't have a set schedule anymore and it can get pretty out of control if you don't do something immediately. Good luck to you!
