I was diagnosed when I was 4 years old with ADD/ADHD. I recently had a baby 14 months ago and am worried that he is going to get ADD from me......what is the probability of him getting this disease from me? Someone please help me......Lisa

I have read that ADD is definitely inherited from parents. However, I do know that some people with ADD have children that do not have it. My sister has ADHD (age 37) and has one son that doesn't have ADD at all, and younger son that does.
As a new mother, I know you worry, because I did the same thing and still do worry about my daughter. My daughter has ADHD, is taking Strattera, and you know what? She is still incredibly creative, beautiful, naturally athletic, and very intelligent. She could have a disease worse than ADD (I know, because I have it myself, only no hyperactivity). I consider myself fortunate to have a great daughter like mine. Stop worrying and enjoy your beautiful child! Things will work out just fine.

I agree with Kiki. I have ADD and my son has ADHD. He is a busy little bugger, but he is also a great kid. My daughter does not have it as far as we know.
I have also been told that it is genetic, but since we have it as adults, at least we can help our kids.
Don't worry too much, I agree, things could be worse.

I have done alot of indepth research on this subject and I am currently doing my masters project on this exact subject.
It is definately an inheritable trait, however like Becky said, I feel that there could be many other things that could be worse.

Montage, I don't know if those are something that get published or what, but I would be very interested in finding out more about your research.
Thanks...Becky

Ryansmom, I recommend reading some of the books by Dr.'s Hallowell and Ratey. They have decades of practical experience and will probably have insights to much that you haven't even mentioned. To your question they state that between 5 and 8% of the U.S. population is ADD or ADHD and that if one parent has it then it typically is found in 30% of offspring and if both parents it's > 50%. They also describe in great detail how many children manifest it differently and often outgrow or learn to handle it well, particularly if recognized early and treated.
