Hi,
I'm Rob, in New Zealand. It's pretty subtropical here right now -- torrential rain, hot and sticky ...
Anyway, I've just been reading about ADD and my wife and I both recognise ourselves. We've got all the symptoms on the DSM description! We haven't been officially diagnosed and I don't know if we'll bother, as we're not about to take meds for it. However, everything we've read rings huge bells for us.
We were actually ROFLing as we read the various websites -- this is both of us to a tee!
On the serious side, our levels of disorganisation and distractedness cause a lot of problems and stress, especially as we have two small children. It also makes me very inefficient in my work and I spend more hours than I need to at my desk. I have started working in a cafe well out of town, where there are absolutely no distractions at all ... but I just know that if they ever get Wireless there, I will be surfing the web, having email convos and all the other things I whittle away my time with ... och ...
Anyway, it's great to know there's a support board. I don't feel depressed about this at all -- it's a sense of relief. We both felt guilty about ourselves, as though we had character flaws, but having seen brain scans of ADD people, can see we're hardwired to be like this! Yay!
I don't see us as 'disordered', just different. The positive sides outweigh the negatives, but the negatives can be bloody difficult to deal with, most of the time. Finding out about ADD means we can start to work out strategies for getting on top of the realities of daily life.
We think our daughter has these 'symptoms' (I prefer 'personality traits') too, so this will make us more lenient towards her when she gets sidetracked and leaves her room in a mess and delays our attempts at scheduling etc ...
